Human relationships in the focus of Finn Filmnapok 2024
FinnAgora’s most popular event of the year, Finn Filmnapok – Finnish Film Days from 14–18 February 2024 brings the best of contemporary Finnish cinema for the 13th time to Toldi Cinema in Budapest. Featuring Teemu Nikki’s newest masterpiece, Aki Kaurismäki’s latest movie, two touching documentaries and a versatile collection of short movies, this year’s festival focuses on relationships – be it between family members or neighbours, friends or lovers, nature and us.
The opening piece of the festival, Family Time, the debut film of Tia Kouvo has gathered a lot of international attention, winning the main prizes at the Seoul International Women’s Film Festival and at Nordische Filmtage in Lübeck as well as earning a nomination in the Best Newcomer category at the Berlin International Film Festival. The movie has been praised for the honest and sometimes movingly raw depiction of family life and Finnishness.
We are also delighted to present a masterpiece by director Teemu Nikki, Death Is a Problem for the Living, which can easily be called “a category of its own”. Two years ago his award-winning film The Blind Man Who Did Not Want to See Titanic earned the director a standing ovation at Finn Filmnapok. Don’t miss out on this unique director's newest work about game addiction and a “brainless man”. Our programme also includes two movies starring the Golden Globe nominated actress Alma Pöysti: Fallen Leaves by Aki Kaurismäki and Four Little Adults by Selma Vilhunen.
This year we offer a versatile short film collection, and documentaries as well: Suvi West’s touching Máhccan – Homecoming tells about the Finnish National Museum returning crucial Sámi objects to the Sámi people and to Sápmi (Samiland). Juha Suonpää’s Lynx Man is a documentary about a Finnish man's passion about the feline lynxes. The film shows the connection of nature and us, and the animals living in it, in a beautiful and moving way.
We created special programmes for this year’s festival: on Sunday, 18 February a workshop will be held before the screening of the documentary film Lynx Man, where visitors can make lynx masks that can be seen in the movie. FinnAgora has also invited some of the creators and actors to participate in interesting Q&As and panel discussions about the subjects shown in the films, and the Finnish film industry in general – details will be announced soon!
We hope that you will find something interesting in our program, and that you will experience something new, and embrace some Finnish weirdness as well during the thirteenth annual Finn Filmnapok!
All films will be screened with English and Hungarian subtitles.
