During the Institute's autumn season, several Finnish artists will be visiting and working in Hungary. We are especially proud of the fresh collaboration with the Art Quarter Budapest artist residency. Expert visits to Helsinki will pave the way for the cooperation in the coming years. The Institute's social programme will include a project on minority languages towards the end of the year. We warmly welcome you to join our programme!

 

August

We supported the expert visit of Klára Lujza Csikós, curator of the performing arts centre Trafo, to Helsinki from 31.8.-3.9. Trafó, known as the number one venue for performing arts in Budapest, plans to bring the Finnish artist Kalle Nio's The Green to Hungary in spring 2024.

31.8.-3.9. An installation by Joensuu-based light artist Kari Kola lit up the night sky with a blue glow at the brand new Inota Festival. The festival, which ingeniously combined light art and electronic music in an old thermal power plant, was part of the Veszprem-Balaton Capital of Culture year. The Institute supported the realisation of the work at the festival.



September

15.9.2023-14.1.2024. Works by photographer Elina Brotherus are on display in the upcoming Handle with Care exhibition at the Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art. In January, Brotherus will lead a workshop related to the themes of her photography series featured in the exhibition.

15.9. European Language Cocktail Bar. An event celebrating Europe's linguistic and cultural diversity, organised every September by the EUNIC network. The event, which offers short language courses, provides fun activities and an easy way to get acquainted with different languages.

20.9. Finnish artists Ville Andersson and Martta Tuomaala will start a three-month artist residency at Art Quarter Budapest (aqb). The Institute invited applications with a short notice in early August for a Finnish artist or an artist working in Finland for the residency. In just over 24 hours, we received ten applications and dozens of contacts. Tuomaala and Andersson were finally selected by the aqb curators.

On 29.9. & 30.9., the Budapest International Book Fair will welcome Finnish author Piia Leino as a guest author. Leino will take part in a panel discussion during the European Writers' Meeting satellite programme on 29.9. The Institute, in cooperation with Leino's publisher, the Hungarian Scholar, will organise a discussion at the Scholar bookstore on 30.9. at 15.00. Leino will be interviewed by the well-known journalist Adrienn Csepelyi. Leino and Csepelyi will discuss whether fiction can help us to better understand fact, i.e. what is happening in the world right now. 




October

In October, the Institute will support the expert visit of Ludwig Museum curator Viktória Popovics to Helsinki from 3.-6.10.Popovics will explore Finnish contemporary art as part of Frame Contemporary Art Finland's visitor programme.

25.10. Alli Haapasalo's film Girls, Girls, Girls will be screened in cooperation with the Embassy of Finland in honor of the International Day of the Girl celebrated on 11.10. We will give you more details soon!

 

27.-28.10. New Jazz from Finland festival at Opus Jazz Club. This year, the annual weekend of Finnish jazz will feature bands Kaisa's Machine and Superposition.

In November, we will organise a minority language seminar with the support of Svenska kulturfonden. More information coming soon!

 

16.11. A traditional language café in cooperation with the Kalevala friendship association. The Language Café provides all Finnish language lovers the opportunity to talk with native speakers and students of Finnish. The Finnish language is used through exercises, games as well as guided discussions.
