Next year is the 100th anniversary of Finnish independence so the timing is perfect to remember that there are actually two official languages in Finland, Finnish and Swedish. Therefore this November FinnAgora arranges the weeks of Swedish-speaking Finns called Hejsan Budapest! – brings Swedish-speaking Finns to you.
The aim of Hejsan Budapest! – brings Swedish-speaking Finns to youis to present success stories of a multilingual country: accordionist Maria Kalaniemi, dancer Carl Knif and visual artist Viggo Wallensköld, just to mention a few.
Hejsan Budapest! is also about reminding one about the benefits minorities actually bring about. It is not only culture that is concerned as minority language has proved to be a possible key to economic growth. However, in order for a minority to enjoy the same level of well-being as the majority, both a positive view of the minority and an efficient language policy are necessary. When the majority is generous to the minority, both groups prosper.
Hejsan Budapest! has something to offer for everyone, be it music, arts, family events or social debate. Welcome – Välkommen!
