Literature Night Debrecen 2026
29.05.2026 - 31.05.2026

Literature Night Debrecen 2026

At this year’s Literature Night in Debrecen, Finland will be represented by playwright and author E. L. Karhu and an excerpt from her novel For My Brother (Bátyámnak), translated into Hungarian by Zsóka Panka and published by Metropolis Media in 2025 (Galaktika series).

E. L. Karhu is known for exploring the boundaries of personal freedom, responsibility, and madness in her works. For My Brother tells the story of a young girl whose admiration for her brother gradually turns into obsession. Jealousy, rivalry, and distorted attachment emerge in a darkly humorous narrative.

Literature Night invites audiences to an extraordinary literary journey through world literature: over the course of three evenings, actors will read excerpts from the works of 25 authors from 25 countries at venues not necessarily associated with literature, offering fresh perspectives on both text and place.

This year’s theme is HAUNTINGS.

In Debrecen, charming downtown venues will host the literary readings for the eighth consecutive year. The diverse palette of world literature will come to life through performances by actors of the Csokonai National Theatre.

The programme takes place simultaneously at different venues between 18:30 and 21:30, with readings beginning every half hour (18:30, 19:00, 19:30, 20:00, 20:30, 21:00). Each venue features a 10–15-minute excerpt from one author’s work, while different countries are presented on different evenings. Visitors are free to create their own literary route with the help of a printed map.

Participation is free of charge and does not require prior registration.
