New Jazz from Finland | Alexi Tuomarila Quartet
Featuring:
Bendik Hofseth – saxophone
Alexi Tuomarila – piano Mikael
Saastamoinen – double bass
Markku Ounaskari – drums
The repertoire of the Alexi Tuomarila Quartet consists of the bandleader's compositions, in which the melodic and harmonic signatures of all four musicians are shown, while the main role remains one of openness and spontaneous interaction. Alexi Tuomarila toured for a decade with the legendary Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko; Her album Sphere was chosen as the album of the month by BBC Music Magazine and won the EMMA Award, also known as the Finnish Grammy. Bendik Hofseth became known in the band Steps Ahead, as the successor to Michael Brecker. Many of Markku Ounaskari's albums have been released by ECM Records, while Mikael Saastamoinen represents the younger generation of the Finnish improvisation scene, having worked on several projects, for example with Linda Fredriksson, who was also a great success in Opus.
