Open Call for Artists: Stay at Valóság residence and attendance at Art Market Budapest

FinnAgora is looking for a Finnish or Finland-based fine artist to stay at the Valóság residence in Budapest for one month and to be part of Art Market Budapest, the largest contemporary art event in Hungary. 

Art Market Budapest is an art fair, where galleries showcase and sell artists' art at Bálna conference center in the center of Budapest. The event takes place on 6-10 October 2021 (Press opening 6.10). FinnAgora invites the artist to stay at Valóság, the only Finnish artist residence in Hungary, for one month prior to the event.  The artist would stay in Budapest from 16.9 to 15.10. 

The stay at the residence is free for the artist, as is the attendance at the art fair. The institute will not pay any other compensation for the stay at the residence or for the exhibition at the Art Market. Any compensation for the art sold at the market will go to the artist, and there will be no commission on the institutes or the art markets behalf.

FinnAgora is the Finnish institute in Hungary that works to create connections between Hungary and Finland in the fields of culture, science, education and business. The institute has been active in Budapest since 2004. More information on the institute can be found here: http://www.finnagora.hu/ 

Valóság is a Finnish artist residence located in central Budapest. It was established in 2011, and has hosted hundreds of artists so far. It's possible to bring the whole family to the residency as well. More information can be found here: http://www.valosag.fi/ 

Art Market Budapest is an international contemporary art fair established in 2011. It’s the leading contemporary art fair in Central Europe, and it showcases established artists as well as upcoming artists. More information can be found here: https://artmarketbudapest.hu/ 

What we are looking for

  • A high quality contemporary artist, preferably well-established and experienced but we are open to new artists as well

  • Has to be able to sell the art at the fair. The artist is responsible for the realization of the sales of their art at the fair 

  • Art created during the stay at the residency doesn’t have to be the art exhibited and sold at the fair. However the transportation of the art to be sold at the fair to and from Budapest will be the responsibility of the artist to arrange and pay for 

  • The artist is responsible for arranging and paying for their own travel to and from Budapest

  • Please note: FinnAgora is preferably looking for an artist that is represented by a gallery or other institution. If the artist is not represented by a gallery, arrangements can be made to accompany this. However preference will be given for those having representation. 

What we offer 

  • One month stay from 16.9 to 15.10 at the residence for free. Families are welcome to stay at the residence. 

  • Exhibition at Art Market Budapest for free from 6.10-10.10 

  • Networking opportunities during Art Market Budapest 

  • Visibility in the largest contemporary art event in Central 

Submission process 

  • Artist CV, sample artwork, images of the art that would be showcased at the fair, and short descriptions of the pieces of art should be sent to info@finnagora.hu with the subject line: “Open Call for Valosag residence and Art Market Budapest”. 

  • The deadline for the application is Sunday 13 June 2021

  • The selection of the chosen artist will be made by the director of the institute, in collaboration with the team of the institute and the team of Art Market Budapest.

  • The applications will be made anonymous by a team member of the institute, who will not participate in the final decision-making. 

  • The applicants will be informed of the decision by 22 June 2021.
